About the Program

The African Scholarship Program aims to empower early career researchers in Africa by providing them with access to the Institute’s extensive library, mentorship from experienced researchers, networking opportunities, and other resources essential for conducting impactful research. Through this initiative, the Nordic Africa Institute seeks to enhance knowledge production about Africa and foster closer ties between African and Nordic research communities.

Duration of the Program

Participants can stay for a minimum of 60 days up to a maximum of 90 days. Please note that the Institute operates at reduced capacity during certain periods, and applicants cannot choose visits during 15 June–15 August and 15 December–15 January.

Financial Support and Benefits:
The scholarship includes a round-trip economy class airfare, accommodation, a daily subsistence allowance of 400 SEK (approximately 40 USD), an installation grant of 2,500 SEK (approximately 250 USD), and access to a shared office space with a computer. The subsistence allowance is provided solely for days spent in Uppsala.

Participants also have access to the Institute’s specialized library on contemporary Africa, as well as libraries at Uppsala University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Additionally, guest researchers are given the opportunity to present their work at the Nordic Africa Institute and to visit other institutions in the Nordic countries.
Who Can Apply:

The program welcomes early career researchers based in Africa, including full-time staff at African universities or research centers enrolled in doctoral program and postdoctoral researchers within 5 years of PhD completion. Research topics should align with Social Sciences and Humanities, focusing on contemporary Africa and relating to the UN Agenda 2030.

Up-to-date CV with publications list (if available online, include links)
5-page research project outline, detailing proposal and work plan specific to the Institute visit
1-page work plan for the Institute visit, outlining research objectives and expected results
Signed letter of support from the applicant’s Head of Department or senior scholar in the same field, confirming current affiliation and research focus.
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants with past or current affiliation with the Nordic Africa Institute are ineligible. Applications must be in English. In case of funding shortfall, applicants will be promptly notified.
