The Hornby Educational Trust prioritises capacity building for English language teaching in low- and middle-income countries. It awards Master’s degree scholarships to teachers and related professionals with experience and evidenced potential to impact and enhance the field of English language teaching and learning in their home country.
The Hornby Educational Trust is a charitable organization that focuses on promoting the teaching and learning of English around the world. Established in honor of A.S. Hornby, a distinguished English language teaching expert, the trust aims to support English language educators, enhance language teaching methodologies, and contribute to the professional development of teachers globally.
One of the flagship programs of the Hornby Educational Trust is the Hornby Scholarships. These scholarships are typically awarded to English language teachers from non-English-speaking countries who show dedication and promise in the field of English language teaching. The scholarships often include opportunities for the recipients to pursue postgraduate studies in applied linguistics or related fields at reputable institutions.
The Hornby Educational Trust’s commitment to advancing English language teaching aligns with its broader goal of fostering cross-cultural understanding and communication. By investing in the professional growth of educators, the trust aims to have a positive impact on language education, ultimately benefiting students and communities worldwide
Established with a clear mission outlined in its Trust Deed, the A S Hornby Educational Trust is primarily dedicated to advancing the teaching and learning of English as a Foreign Language. Central to its objectives is the provision of scholarships and grants to support this cause. Since its inception in 1961, the Trust has played a pivotal role in facilitating the professional development of numerous educators in the Global South.
The Trust’s flagship initiative, known as the ‘Hornby Scholars’ scheme, has been instrumental in offering individual scholarships to teachers, enabling them to pursue Master of Arts (MA) programs in the United Kingdom. This initiative not only enhances the skills and knowledge of educators but also contributes to the broader goal of elevating English language education in regions where it is most needed.
In addition to the Hornby Scholars scheme, the Trust extends its impact through ‘Hornby Schools’ in regional settings, creating localized hubs for English language teaching and learning. Furthermore, the Trust supports its alumni and Teacher Associations by providing small-scale project funding, thereby fostering a network of professionals committed to the advancement of English language education.
The A S Hornby Educational Trust’s sustained efforts over the years underscore its commitment to making a meaningful and lasting contribution to the field of English language education, particularly in regions where access to such opportunities is vital for educational growth and development.
